Dallas-area HOV lanes to open soon

Email Print Tell us your story Comments (2)

Sick of those long rush-hour commutes when you can plainly see those pretty HOV lanes sitting unused? Well, transportation officials are promising that those lanes will soon open to alleviate at least some of that stress. The stretch from Exchange Parkway in Allen to 635 on Central Expressway/75 will open in December, while the lanes heading east on I-635 from 75 to I-30 and the ones on I-30 east and west of downtown are all schedule to open in January.

I don't know about those other ones, but I have serious doubts as to the effectiveness of the HOV lanes on 75 going to and from Allen. First of all, you have to live in freakin' Allen or points north to even access the dang thing (unless they're planning on removing those poles, which doesn't seem to be happening). And secondly, if those poles do remain, any car that breaks down in those lanes is going to cause a massive HOV traffic jam. Any lane that doesn't allow you to freely exit in case of emergency (like the one going to and from Southern Dallas) is my idea of a traffic nightmare. Sorry, folks, I'm staying away from those lanes at all costs.

I'm thinking those white thingamajigs are simply to keep people out of the lane until it opens. If they were hardcore about keeping people in the HOV lane (or out of it) permanently I'd think they'd use concrete barriers.

I wonder how much damage one of those would inflict on your car, anyway. They seem kind of flimsy.
