Rice 43, Southern Methodist University (SMU) 42
DALLAS The SMU Mustangs once again showcased their losing pedigree, snatching defeat from the jaws of victory in a 43-42 loss Saturday afternoon. Leading 42-27 entering the fourth, the Mustangs gave up two touchdowns and a last-second field goal to the Owls, who improved their amazing record to 3-7. The Mustangs dropped to 1-9.
SMU quarterback Justin Willis had an up-and-down game, providing both positive and negative excitement all game. Willis went 13-for-31 for 165 yards, but also threw for four touchdowns --and two interceptions that were also returned for scores. Willis also ran 14 times for 62 yards and another touchdown.
SMU got out to an characteristic big lead early in this game, mostly based of the strength of a previously non-existent running game. Sticking to the running game, SMU ran 50 times for 317 yards for a 6.3 average. The Mustangs gained just 165 yards passing, however, and having 13 penalties for 129 yards certainly didn't help the Mustangs, either.
