McKinney High School places at National Scholastic Press Association Competition

PHILADELPHIA, PA – All three journalism divisions at McKinney High School recently placed in the Best of Show competition at the National Scholastic Press Association’s (NSPA) convention held in Philadelphia, Penn.

The Lion yearbook won first place, the school’s student newspaper, Mane Events placed fifth and the school’s student-produced television broadcast program, MHS1, placed sixth. McKinney High School was the only school at the convention of more than 5,000 students to place in three Best of Show competitions.

The school’s yearbook, The Lion, won first place in the competition topping student-produced school yearbooks from such states as Virginia, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan and Colorado. The McKinney High School yearbook has placed in the Top 10 Best of Show in every convention they have attended over the past 11 years.

This is the third time the yearbook has won first place. The last time The Lion won the top honor was in 2001 when Alyssa Armentrout was the yearbook editor. Today, Ms. Armentrout is the adviser of MHS1, the school’s student produced television program which won a 6th place award in the Broadcast Program competition.

“Working on a high school publication is about as real-life as any high school class can be,” Oglesbee said. “With deadlines, work nights, communication skills, financing large budgets for production and top level computer skills, it’s hard work for these kids. For them to be recognized as one of the best in the nation makes it even more rewarding. These kids have amazing commitment, and it shows.”

McKinney High School’s yearbook, The Lion, is under the supervision of Oglesbee and the school’s newspaper, Mane Events, is under the direction of Jean Ann Collins. Armentrout is the adviser for MHS1.
