SMU men’s soccer stunned by Florida International
Florida International scored three second-half goals to shock the No. 5 SMU men's soccer team, 3-1, in the first round of the Conference USA tournament in Birmingham, Ala.
The Mustangs, who won last year's C-USA tournament, were seeded second this year and slipped to 13-4-2. Ranked No. 5 in the final National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll, the Ponies now await word on their first opponent in the NCAA Tournament. Pairings will be announced at 4:30 p.m. Monday on ESPNews.
Junior forward Scott Geppert gave the Ponies an early lead when he converted an assist from senior defender Adrian Chevannes in the seventh minute. But Juan Guerra, Chris Caporaletti and Steven Cabas scored in the second half to lift FIU.
Geppert's goal was his seventh this season, tying him with junior midfielder Bruno Guarda and junior forward Richard Oliva for the team lead.
