DALLAS Two Dallas police officers, Senior Cpls. Jeffrey Nelson and Al Schoelen, are facing disciplinary action after an investigation into their over-the-top enforcement behavior.
The two officers were found to have put "inaccurate, false or improper information" on tickets and basically gone ballistic on homeless people, transients, and prostitutes. Disciplinary action could include anything from counseling to being fired, to be decided by Dallas Police Chief David Kunkle.
The story in the Dallas Morning News has a number of things that make it worth reading, including: the fact that Nelson issued 230 at-large tickets, and Schoelen issued 63, compared to "only a few a year" by their peers; that these officers got glowing reviews from supervisors; that previous complaints against them went ignored and unpunished. And last but not least, the story actually acknowledges other local publications -- "the subject of stories in D Magazine and the Dallas Observer". Wow. Way to go.
