Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas performing in Dallas

In these politically charged times, the title of Tuesday night’s concert at the Meyerson Symphony Center is bound to raise a few eyebrows — “The No-Borders Concert Tour : From USA to Mexico.”

The concert is performed by musicians with the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas (POA) under the supervision of the founder of the POA, as well as its music director, Alondra de la Parra.

What’s so noteworthy, in addition to the fact that the musicians are young and representative of the best up-and-coming talent from all the Americas’ continents, is that de la Parra herself is only 26 years old.

When she was 22 years old, de la Parra was the first Mexican woman to conduct in New York City. Described as being “uniquely entrepreneurial,” she founded the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas to promote young soloists and composers from New York City to Buenos Aires.

One of those young talented musicians who will appear with the POA orchestra is a gifted Venezuelan pianist named Ana Karina Alamo.

Ms. Alamo has played from Vienna to Caracas and in 1997 was awarded the Jose Felix Ribas prize, Venezuela’s highest honor to a young artist for contributions to the cultural enhancement of the country.

The No-Borders Concert Tour stop in Dallas is only one of five remaining performances slated for this concert. From Dallas, the orchestra will perform next in Mexico City and end the tour in Washington, D.C.

Given the mission statement of the POA, the title of the concert tour is fitting:

"POA's mission is to pursue musical excellence, to develop young musical leaders with a cross-cultural vision and the ability to convey a spirit of hemispheric brotherhood through the most universal of languages that of music."

No argument that there needs to be a lot more music in the world than fighting.
