Dallas ISD and the City of Dallas take city planning to schools

The Dallas Independent School District and the City of Dallas have partnered in the forwardDallas! initiative to teach Dallas’ young citizens about city planning and how it affects their communities and the future of Dallas.

DALLAS — The Dallas Independent School District and the City of Dallas have partnered in the forwardDallas! initiative. Dallas ISD’s Superintendent of Schools Michael Hinojosa, City of Dallas Mayor Pro Tem, Elba Garcia (District 1); Dallas City Manager Mary Suhm, and other leaders will present this initiative to Sunset High School students at 10 a.m., Tuesday, November 27.

The purpose of the urban initiative comprehensive plan forwardDallas! is to teach Dallas’ young citizens about city planning and how it affects their communities and the future of Dallas.

“The city’s first comprehensive plan adopted by the Dallas City Council will provide our students, who are the future leaders of Dallas, an opportunity to participate in the work to reach Dallas’ goals for the future,” said Superintendent of Schools Michael Hinojosa. “Dallas ISD students will learn how to make Dallas a successful city.”

“We want our young people to have a stake in the long-term development vision for our city,” said Mayor Pro Tem Garcia. “The initiative forwardDallas! gives us a roadmap to allow future growth that will increase the walk-ability of our city, increase the use of our light rail and public transportation systems to help relieve congestion and air pollution, and create urban hubs which combine housing, business and workplaces.”

The Dallas ISD participating high schools in this program are Thomas Jefferson, Bryan Adams, Sunset, South Oak Cliff and the Lincoln Humanities/Communications Magnet. Also, Benjamin Franklin, E. B. Comstock, and L. V. Stockard middle schools are participating in the program, as well as Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center and William Hawley Atwell Law Academy.

The initiative will provide students an introduction to city planning and information on the forwardDallas! plan, the link between city planning and future growth, and will highlight current planning initiatives happening in different communities in Dallas.
