The Guildhall at SMU not banned in Boston
What does the Federal Reserve Bank have to do with video gaming? Not much, I hope...
The Federal Reserve Bank of Boston (of all places) is currently hosting an interactive exhibit on the history of video games entitled "Video Games Evolve: A Brief History from Spacewar! to MMORPGs." (MIT, right across the Charles River, started the interactive video game ball rolling with Spacewar! in 1962.) The Guildhall at SMU has a high-profile presence in the exhibit.
Not sure I'm sold on the idea of Federal Reserve folks getting involved in video gaming, but regardless of personal misgivings you can now go there (I mean, in person) and see/play classic arcade games from the '80s such as Donkey Kong, Ms. Pac Man, Frogger and Space Invaders.
Displays demonstrate a progression of video game console styles, a timeline of video game history and an in-depth look at the motion capture process (which includes video footage of how that process occurs at The Guildhall back in good ol' Big D).
Not a past-master, or even interested in becoming one? Then have a wide-eyed gander at a variety of modern-day games, including Star Wars Galaxies; Immune Attack; Second Life; and massive multi-player online role-playing games (MMORPGs) such as World of Warcraft.
The exhibit runs through January, so if you happen to be in Boston between now and then, drop on by the Federal Reserve Bank and have a look. Maybe they'll be handing out crisp new virtual reality hundreds as souvenirs.
