Memphis 55, Southern Methodist University (SMU) 52 (3OT)
The SMU Mustangs unexpectedly put up a fight Saturday afternoon against Memphis, but ultimately failed in triple overtime of a 55-52 season-ending loss. SMU quarterback Justin Willis was driven out of bounds on fourth-and-goal at the two yard line in the third overtime, which set Memphis up for an easy game-winning field goal.
The loss dropped the Mustangs to 1-11 on the season, 0-7 in the conference. Head coach Phil Bennett was fired a month ago, but remained on to coach the final games of the season.
Willis had a good game, going 35-for-48 for 375 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions. Willis also led the team in rushing, running 23 times for 114 yards and a 48-yard touchdown. Wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders caught 13 balls for 118 yards and three touchdowns.
