University of North Texas (UNT) 27, Western Kentucky 26
DENTON The UNT Mean Green overcame an early deficit Saturday afternoon, beating the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers 27-26 in Denton. Down 20-7 at one point in the third quarter, UNT stormed back with three Jamario Thomas rushing touchdowns to ice the game in the fourth.
Thomas had a stellar game, rushing 16 times for 147 yards and three touchdowns of 8, 30 and 42 yards. Thomas' game could not have come at a better time, since quarterback Giovanni Vizza had a subpar game, going 20-for-42 for 202 yards and three interceptions with no touchdowns.
The win was a marked departure from first year head coach Todd Dodge's early-season efforts, in which the running game was completely forgotten in favor of a losing strategy of pass-pass-pass-punt. The win improved the Mean Green to 2-9 on the year. UNT's final game is at Florida International next week.
