Grand Prairie holiday ornament commemorates city’s historic Uptown Theater, benefits charity, too
Grand Prairie has created a Grand Prairie holiday ornament that commemorates the city's historic Uptown Theater, which is in the process of being restored.
Janice England, wife of GP mayor Charles England, created the ornament project as a way to celebrate Grand Prairie. Revenues benefit local charities.
Ornaments retail at $14 each and may be purchased at:
- City Hall, Marketing Department, 317 College Street, Mon-Fri 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., or
- Tourist Center, 2170 N. Belt Line Road, Mon-Sat 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., Sun 1-5 p.m.
This fourth in a series of annual ornaments celebrates the completion of the exterior renovation of the Uptown Theater in downtown Grand Prairie. The interior renovation will be complete by 2009, when the former movie theater will reopen as an arts center after having been restored to its former glory.
The ornament is a gold oval featuring the façade of the Uptown against a splash of fireworks. The distinctive marquee of the theatre, along with its blade sign and green and pink neon sign finial, appear to pop out from the ornament, adding a three dimensional element.
