TCU football’s Ortiz to play in East-West Shrine Game

0

TCU defensive end Chase Ortiz has been selected to play in the East-West Shrine Game Jan. 19 in Houston.

Ortiz will be the 25th Horned Frog to play in a college All-Star Game during Gary Patterson's seven-year tenure as TCU's head coach. The Frogs were represented in last year's East-West Shrine Game by offensive tackle Herb Taylor and safety Marvin White. Both went on to become NFL draft picks.

A candidate for Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Year, Ortiz appears on the final watch list for the Ted Hendricks Award as the nation's top defensive end.

The senior from League City, Texas, leads TCU and ranks among the MWC and national leaders with eight sacks, 14.5 tackles for a loss and three forced fumbles. He has a tackle for a loss in nine of 12 games this season, including three multi-sack efforts.

Ortiz was the MWC Defensive Player of the Week after recording three tackles for a loss, including two sacks, in addition to forcing two fumbles and recovering one in a 34-10 victory over UNLV.

Ortiz is a two-time All-MWC selection who has started all but one game over the last three seasons. He is on pace to graduate next month.
