15th annual Winter SolstiCelebration at Cathedral of Hope

Nation's second-largest celebration of 2007's shortest day features music, dance, and poetry.

Winter SolstiCelebration is Dallas’ largest and longest running seasonal tradition, now in its 15th year. With attendance of over 750 people, the event - held this year on Friday, Dec. 21 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Cathedral of Hope - is the next largest Winter Solstice event in the nation, second only to Paul Winter's winter solstice celebrations held in New York City. The event celebrates the interfaith community, emphasizing the qualities and concerns we share as humans.

Winter SolstiCelebration is held each December, as close to the shortest day of the year as possible, and features a diverse cast of professional musicians, dancers, singers and poets. The participatory and interactive service integrates ritual, ceremony, concert and performance, and the Yule Fest features food, music, shopping and roving characters.

Special guest this year is The Women’s Chorus of Dallas. SolstiCelebration core performers include vocalists Lainey Bernstein, Annie Benjamin and Matt Woodbury; poetry ensemble Dancing Tongue; the dreamsicles; storytellers Gene and Peggy Helmick-Richardson; trumpeter Freddie Jones; percussionist Michael Kenny; flutist Cornell Kinderknecht; Breath of Life ensemble; dancers Sultan’s Dreams; ritualist and writer Amy Martin; and harpist Geoffrey Ricketts.

Each year hundreds of pounds of pantry items are collected for the church’s food drive and winter wear for their coat drive. The event also raises funds for the Cathedral of Hope’s Interfaith Peace Chapel project.
