Collin College rolls out text messaging alert system
Collin College officials have launched a cell phone text messaging alert system designed to warn students and staff of unscheduled campus closings due to, for instance, inclement weather. The system - dubbed "CougarAlert" - could also be employed in cases of emergency situations occurring on campus when students are already present and an evacuation is called for (e.g., the Virginia Tech shooting incident).
Specifically, the sorts of things the system might warn students of include unexpected closures or evacuations stemming from inclement weather, power outages, police emergencies, catastrophes (e.g., Godzilla or whatever it is that's going to be stomping NYC on 1-18-08) and hazardous chemical exposures. Officials want to emphasize that the system will not be used for promotional purposes or to remind of scheduled closures, such as holidays.
Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to get their virtual butts in gear and subscribe to the service (with the option of selecting whether to receive the messages via text, phone or e-mail); note that, while there is no fee to subscribe, existing text messaging fees imposed by your service provider will of course remain in effect.
"Nothing is more important than the safety and protection of our students and employees," says CCCCD pres, Cary Israel.
(Isn't he forgetting about a hearty breakfast?)
