UTA’s Bangladesh Student Organization begins cyclone relief fund

A Category 4 cyclone raked the southwest coast of Bangladesh on Nov. 15, pushing a 10-foot tidal wave across much of the low-lying countryside. The current death toll has passed 3,300, with thousands still missing. The Bangladesh Red Crescent Society says up to 10,000 may have died in this tragedy. An estimated 280,000 people are unable to return to their homes, which were wiped out by the storm. These survivors are now struggling for basic necessities such as tents, food, drinking water, clothing and medicine. From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, the Bangladesh Student Organization is setting up booths at the UT Arlington campus to collect donations to purchase relief supplies. The booths will be located on the mall outside the E.H. Hereford University Center, 300 W. First St., and on the mall outside the Central Library, 702 Planetarium Place. Students, faculty, staff and community members are urged to visit one of the booths to make a donation of supplies. Checks may also be sent to Bangladesh Student Organization chapter president Mohammad Noor at Box 19072, or to chapter faculty advisor Dr. Sahadat Hossain, assistant professor in the department of civil and environmental engineering, at Box 19308, The University of Texas at Arlington, Arlington, TX 76019.
