TCU’s new University Union building receives its crown
Who says there's no free lunch? There's a contest going on for a semester's worth.
Texas Christian University's new Brown-Lupton University Union building is still under construction, but earlier this month there was a sign that the process is rapidly coming to a head. I'm talking about the recent "topping ceremony."
On Nov. 12, cranes lifted a 13,000 pound spire (some might call it a cap, or crown) to its position atop the highest point of the $45.7 million, 145,700 sq. ft. building's framework.
In honor of the event, dignitaries, attendees and general hangers-on were treated to music and a baked potato bar "with toppings" (get it?), while construction workers and crane operators carried out the delicate placement and affixing procedure. Students on hand for the event were offered a chance to register to win a free meal plan for an entire semester. That drawing is yet to be held, according to the office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs; apparently there will be some further opportunities for registration before the lucky "free lunch" (and dinner?) winner is announced.
The new University Union building will house dining facilities, meeting rooms, a post office, copy center, printing services, a convenience store, a gift shop and a 350-seat theater.
Construction is expected to be completed in August of 2008.
