SMU men’s swimming qualifies several for NCAA consideration
The men's swimming and diving team qualified one individual swimmer and two relay teams for NCAA consideration in the first day of the University of Texas Invitational.
The 200 free relay team of Pontus Renholm, Alex Hetland, Luka Vrtovec and Thomas Fadnes finished seventh, touching the wall in 1:20.71, good for NCAA consideration. The 400 relay squad of Renholm, Hetland, Brett Denham and Vrtovec also qualified for NCAA consideration, finishing third in 3:13.68.
Individually, Vrtovec finished ninth in the 50 free, stopping the clock in 19.82, qualifying him for NCAA consideration as well.
SMU had strong showings in the relays, as the "B" relay squad of Shane Milu, Maverick Smalley, Grega Plevelj and Mitchell Johnson finished 11th in the 200 free, completing the course in 1:24.57. The 400 medley relay "B" team of Smalley, Plevelj, Nate Clark and Fadnes came in 12th, touching the wall in 3:23.34.
Denham finished 31st in the 100 fly, stopping the clock in 49.87. Clark touched the wall in 4:29.17, good for 15th overall in the 500 free. In the 200 IM, Smalley managed a time of 1:52.06 and 24th place. Fadnes completed the 50 free in 20.74.
The Mustangs will compete Friday in day two of the invitational.
