TCU seniors Scott McCracken and Jonathon Berrettini highlighted the first day of the 2007 Short Course National Championships at the Georgia Tech Aquatics Center on Thursday as both Frogs broke the school record in the 50-free event.
In the 50-free preliminary, McCracken placed 13th and Berrettini followed in 15th out of 73 swimmers in a strong field to qualify for the finals. McCracken, a native of Houston, Texas, became the new record holder and the first Frog to ever break the 19-second barrier with a time of 19.99 to finish seventh. Berrettini also shattered the old TCU record of 20.34 with a time of 20.10 to place eighth.
Josh Bagby, a sophomore from Houston, also recorded a strong showing in the 50-free, placing 35th in the preliminary with a personal-best time of 20.71.
Junior Jason Hauck and freshman Edgar Peyro also competed on Thursday, as Hauck placed 56th in the 500-free (4:37.89) and Peyro finished 59th in the 200-IM (1:55.95).
In the 400-medley relay event, the team of Berrettini, Cameron Allred, Hauck and Bagby finished second in the opening heat with a time of 3:22.90. The time placed 13th out of 22 teams overall.
The men will compete at the Short Course National Championships on Friday and Saturday and take part in the USA Swimming Long Course Invitational on Sunday.
