UTA women’s basketball falls to Texas

UT Arlington women's basketball fell 76-60 to Texas Thursday night in Austin. Freshman Tamara Simmons led the Mavs with 11 points, while junior Erin Dixon had 12 rebounds on the night as the Mavs fall to 3-2 on the season.

The Longhorns jumped out to a 7-2 lead, but a layup from Tiffeny Riles and a basket from beyond the arch from senior Maryann Abanobi brought the Mavs even at seven with 14:15 left in the first half.

Over the next five minutes, Texas went on a 13-8 run for the five-point advantage (20-15). Another tre by Abanobi and a jumper from Kiarra Shofner tied the score 20-20 at the 8:27 mark.

With 4:56 left in the half Dixon hit a jumper from the block to give UTA it first lead of the game 26-25. One minute later, Dixon added a layup to drive the Mavs lead to three (28-25).

The Longhorns closed out the half with ten unanswered points to lead 35-28 heading into the locker room.

Texas opened the second half by outscoring UTA 14-to-4 pushing its lead to 17 (49-32) at the 16:19 mark. The Mavs cut the Longhorns lead to 11 with 11:30 left on the clock on a put-back from sophomore Kristina Grace.

With a 17-14 run over the next seven minutes, Texas led 70-56 with 4:47 left in the game. In the final three minutes of the game, the Longhorns outscored the Mavericks 6-to-4 for the 16-point win.

UTA will be back in action on Dec. 8 when they travel the short distance to Dallas for a showdown with SMU.
