Busy weekend for TCU women’s tennis

HEB Baylor Invitational

The TCU women's tennis team wrapped up action at the HEB Baylor Invitational at the Baylor Tennis Center on Saturday.

Maria Babanova, a freshman from Moscow, Russia, fell in the second round of the women's open singles "A" consolation draw to North Texas' Madura Ranganathan, 6-4, 6-3. Another TCU newcomer, Idunn Hertzberg, suffered a second round loss in the "A" consolation draw to Karen Scida of UT-San Antonio, 6-4, 6-1.

Hertzberg, from Oslo, Norway, also teamed up with Babanova in the opening round of the women's open doubles "A" consolation draw, falling to Sam Houston State's Irina Sotnikova and Peta Taylor, 8-5.

Four TCU netters will compete in the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships that will get underway on Saturday in Pacific Palisades, Calif.

Women's Open Doubles "A" Consolation Draw (First Round)

Sotnikova/Taylor (Sam Houston State) def. Babanova/Hertzberg (TCU) 8-5

Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships

TCU women's tennis player Kewa Nichols highlighted the first day of action at the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships on Saturday with a win over No. 9-16 seed Maria Sanchez.

"Kewa played an outstanding match with her win over Maria Sanchez today," said TCU head coach Jefferson Hammond. "Kewa and Nina (Munch-Soegaard) also had a very solid doubles match."

Nichols, a junior from Austin, Texas, defeated Sanchez 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in the opening round of the singles prequalifying draw. Nichols would fall in the following round 6-0, 6-1 to Megan Fudge of Illinois.

Nichols teamed up with Nina Munch-Soegaard in doubles to defeat Denver's Mallory Voelker and Ute Schnoy 8-5. The TCU duo will face Yale's Lindsay Clark and Lauren Ritz in the second round of the prequalifying draw on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. CT.

Singles Prequalifying Draw (Second Round)

Megan Fudge (Illinois) def. Kewa Nichols (TCU) 6-0, 6-1

Doubles Prequalifying Draw (First Round)

Munch-Soegaard/Nichols (TCU) def. Voelker/Schnoy (Denver) 8-5

The TCU women's tennis doubles duo of Nina Munch-Soegaard and Kewa Nichols fell in the second round of the prequalifying draw on Sunday at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships.

The Frogs were defeated 8-4 by Yale's Lindsay Clark and Lauren Ritz after securing an 8-5 victory over Denver's Voelker and Schnoy in the opening round on Saturday.

Munch-Soegaard, Macall Harkins and Anna Sydorska will all begin play on Tuesday in the singles qualifying draw. Harkins and Sydorska will also team up and compete in the doubles qualifying draw on Tuesday.
