Hurst-Euless-Bedford schools to hear “Rachel’s challenge”

HEB ISD students and parents will soon be asked to take up Rachel’s Challenge and positively change the way they treat each other, in memory of Rachel Scott, the first student killed at Columbine High School.

Since that day, April 20, 1999, Scott’s family has used Rachel’s documented acts of kindness and compassion, coupled with the content of her six diaries, to take Rachel’s Challenge to schools around the country.

Both HEB high schools will hear Rachel's Challenge, and parents and families are encouraged to attend evening presentations.

Cody Hodges of Rachel’s Challenge will address Trinity High School students October 1, at two assemblies, at 9:30 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. There will be one student training session after the second assembly, to demonstrate how to sustain the momentum generated by the assembly. Hodges will then speak to parents and community members at a presentation that evening, 7:00 p.m., at the Pat May Center in Bedford, which is located across from Pennington Stadium.

Hodges will present Rachel’s Challenge to LD Bell High School on October 2, at two school assemblies, 9:50 a.m. and 11:05 a.m. After lunch, selected students will undergo training. Hodges will also host the community presentation that evening, 7:00 p.m., at the Pat May Center in Bedford.

The student assemblies will use video and audio clips of Rachel’s life and the Columbine tragedy to motivate students to positively change the way they treat others.

Both evening presentations are open to the public, and students of all ages are encouraged to attend, with their parents and families. The evening presentations end with a specific challenge to parents, showing them how they can reinforce the decisions their youth are making.
