Two Richardson cheerleaders to remain off squad following alcohol violation
Resulting from a beer drinking incident at the home of one of the accused senior girls, two Pearce High School varsity cheerleaders were removed from the squad this past August.
Monday night they lost an appeal to the Richardson school board requesting their reinstatement; the vote of the board members was unanimous in upholding the original decision of school administrators to remove the girls from the squad. Apparently they signed paperwork upon joining the squad which stated they would be immediately removed for any alcohol-related offenses.
Which they were.

Hmmmmm.
So the police simply accused but didn't issue any citations? Pretty harsh punishment if the police did nothing about it, imo.

How is it harsh? They agreed to not drink; they drank; they got kicked off as a result.

Just sayin'. If the cops didn't do anything about it, I wouldn't be terribly happy if I got reprimanded by some parents on a school board.

Clay213 says:
The school board, and the cheerleading squad don't need the police to make a decision about their discipline.
They aren't bound by the same standards of evidence or anything like that.
That's like saying a company needs police involvement to fire someone for inappropriate behavior

Well, I wouldn't be happy getting kicked off the squad, either - but that doesn't mean that the decision is wrong.

Scott Doyle says:
Hey, never said it was wrong - just said it was harsh. Especially if the kids were drinking with the consent and supervision of parents (entirely unlikely, but we don't know the whole story).
And Clay, I only brought it up b/c apparently the school board acted on an accusation by the cops. For all we know, this could be the Chris Jones of Richardson trying to get his daughter on the squad. Seems shady and underhanded to me, and I wants more info (not that I condone shadiness and underhandedness...don't judge me!). wru WFAA journalism?

I'm glad
Many of these parents have been mean to other children in the past, who maybe don't have as much money and power as they do
They have managed to be full fledged alcoholics themselves, and hold prodominate positions at work all the while.
Give some girls a chance that aren't use to having mommy buy their way out of touble all the time. What comes around goes around, and many parents think they can buy teachers pizza, and buy this and buy that, but what do you expect from a parent who is an alcoholic themselves, and managed to hide it by paying everybody off every time their little Cinderella is in trouble?????

Very vindictive.
Is there another school that recently ousted cheerleaders for drinky-drinky?

They've certainly proved their point, remove the only thing in their life that keeps them from turning to the bottle. They'll probably end up waitressing at some diner and nipping gin all night while living in a van down by the river.

There was a big cheerling scandal in McKinney that had underage drinking and scantily clad photos and cheerleaders getting reinstated after huge "donations". But nothing like that ever happens in Richardson [/sarcasm]

The world would be an infinitely better place if cheerleading squads were abolished and replaced by book clubs.

I'm not sure about infinitely. I ponder this considering the reading ability of todays' youth.
Perhaps instead of 'book clubs' you could suggest 'professional strippers.'

For the record, RHS is a magnet school with a waiting list full of intelligent kids waiting to get in. In addition to a fabulous academic program, they have a fantastic robotics program and other programs for braniacs with too much time on their hands. The cheerleaders, as with all other students, are expected to adhere to high standards of behavior and academic performance. These two otherwise smart girls made a very poor decision and are being punished by school administration as a result.
Often first offenses involving minors do not result in tickets or criminal charges unless a felony or major infraction occur, just as adults often get off with a warning when stopped for a minor offense. Usually what does happen is that the youth involved receive a serious scary talking to about the nature of their offense and what could have happened as a result. Whether that was what happened in the case of these two girls I would have no way of knowing, but I can tell you what happened with them is not inconsistent or inappropriate from what has been revealed in the news.
The best defense against teenage drinking is an involved parent. Hopefully these gils have parents who, if they weren't aware before, are now understanding of how important it is they stay more connected with their children and have given the girls other activities to occupy their time, like community service.

These girls were cheerleaders at Pearce High School, not Richardson High School. Richardson High School is a magnet school, but Pearce is not. Pearce happens to be the high school with the most upper-middle class families in Richardson ISD.

It sounds more like they will do the typical thing of out of touch parents: Blame everyone else.
