Crowdus Street Music Festival to debut in Deep Ellum on Saturday October 6
DALLAS You can't tell by looking at it, but the Crowdus Street Music Festival -- a day-long multi-band event on Saturday, October 6, headlined by Fair to Midland -- underscores the difference between Deep Ellum as it used to be versus Deep Ellum now.
The Crowdus fest picks up the pieces of what was once the North Texas Music Festival, an annual event founded in the '90s and modeled on Austin's South By Southwest. Underwritten by Crystal Clear honcho Sam Paulos, the North Texas Music Festival was originally a four-day event that included not just showcases but also seminars and an awards ceremony; it represented a sense of optimism about the viability of the local music scene that doesn't exist today.
That said, there is Texas-OU this weekend and promoter Doug Simmons isn't going to let that opportunity go to waste. Thus, the Crowdus Street Music Festival, taking place on three stages at the Curtain Club, its sibling Liquid Lounge, and the parking lot in between. Approximately 20 bands will perform, including Neverset, Miser, The Feds, System Overload, Bless the Broken, Deaf Pedestrians, At the Park, and more. Gates will open at 3 p.m., and it's $15 to get in.
"I'm going to make it a yearly event," Simmons says. "A bunch of bands have broken up in the past year, but I've seen a mild uprising, a few steps in right direction, and some of the crowds coming back."

"...the parking lot in between."? I'm pretty damn sure that between Curtain Club and Liquid Lounge is a wall, unless they've moved.

yes sam crutsinger, that is true, and you are so smart to point it out. i suppose i could have used the word "adjacent". or "shared." or "the space that abuts both venues." my perspective was on the entries of each place. if you leave the curtain club and walk around to the entrance of the liquid lounge, there is that space "in between". please forgive me for being confusing. i am hoping this won't affect the success of the event and that, once people get there, they will be able to figure it out.

Orren-owned!
I likely won't be going anywhere near downtown this weekend. It's not so much the crowd as the fact that half of it is comprised of Oklahoma folks.

Mike - I very much needed that LOL from this site after weeks of LH-gate.
I too am probably opting out of any Dallas festivities this weekend, so it's a shame I'll miss it. Hopefully it will be a success and show that DE is not quite dead yet (if people can somehow find it).

The death of Deep Ellum would be dreadful. I suggest that Lee Harvey's relocate there as part of a revival compaign. I'll be pleased to hand out promotional pamphlets.

Rick Yost says:
What is happening to Deep Ellum is exactly what Dallas City Hall wants to happen to it. Saving it is not an option. The plans that may be in store for Deep Ellum far outway the fond memories of a small group of Dallasites.
We've seen the decline of downtown, the West End, Lower Greenville, and Deep Ellum. Not only do the city planners influence these changes, but we the public are a big catalyst for the demise of some of our most beloved and memorable spots.
Change happens.

There's nothing wrong with it.
Thanks.
