DALLAS On October 7th, the world's finest competitive speed-eaters will gather at the State Fair of Texas for the Waffle House World Waffle Eating Championship. Top-ranked Joey Chestnut, who upset Takeru Kobayashi at the 2007 4th of July hot dog eating contest by downing an astounding 66 hot dogs in 12 minutes, will take on a star-studded field of professional eaters, most notably 3rd-ranked Pat "Deep Dish" Bertoletti of Chicago, a dessert specialist who recently beat Chestnut by a half-pound in a pork rib eating contest.
The ten-minute all-you-can-eat waffle-eating contest will feature not merely an all-star cast of competitive eaters, but a virtual cornucopia of interesting characters to boot. Nipping at the heels of Chestnut and Bertoletti will be 26th-ranked Brad "Old School" Sciullo, a chef from Uniontown, PA, who can down a gallon of milk in 26 seconds. Sciullo recently upset a legion of higher-ranked gurgitators at the World Buffalo Wing Eating Championships. Also competing will be Brickhouse Braunstein from Bethesda, Dave "U.S. Male" Goldstein, and Walker "Texas Ranger" Duke, a waffle- specialist from Dallas, who has been boasting to everyone in earshot that he plans to upset Joey Chestnut in what he's billing as, "the gnosh heard around the world."
"Waffles are an extremely challenging discipline that require jaw strength, stomach capacity, swallow timing, and extraordinary will power," said Richard Shea, president of Major League Eating. "I expect this showdown between America's two preeminent speed-eaters to be so close we'll have to go to the scales."

I've only been to Waffle House a couple of times, but I can vouch for there being a cornucopia of characters.
