Cody Goodnight, a 31-year-old deaf man from Fort Worth, was hit over the head with a crowbar last Saturday when a store clerk interpreted his lack of speech as disrespect.

After Goodnight entered a Family Dollar Store (there's your problem right there) located at 4117 Lancaster Avenue, he failed to respond to whatever the cashier was saying to him. Naturally, the end result involved the cashier throwing change at Goodnight's face and then bludgeoning him when Goodnight bent over.

On Thursday, the cashier's defense attorney declined to comment. Probably for the best.

UPDATE:

According to codyg.info, a website referenced in the comments below maintained by Mr. Goodnight's family—and a website that was actually created long before this incident—not a single person affiliated with the Family Dollar has made an effort to contact the family.

Additionally, Mr. Goodnight has hired an attorney. More updates to come, for sure.

Where the hell is the clerk from? I generally prefer not to interact with people at dollar stores, personally.

Clerk is black,Cody is white. Hate crime? Clerk claims he was "dissed". Took Fort Worth Star Telegram 1 full week to finally report this, then only after prompting. Does this mean Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton are coming to town? Family Dollar destroyed video. Family Dollar can be reached @704 814 3447. CEO is Howard R. Levine.

Holy cow. I can just barely understand the coin throwing, considering we're talking a Family (wha?) Dollar Store. But I would never expect to be cold-cocked for being 'disrespectful' (or deaf, as it were). In light of the lack of response from FD, you'll find me perusing the aisles of The Dollar Tree from now on. Good luck, Cody.

The Magnetic Fields Quartet led by songwriter Stephen Merritt is resolutely "indie" so how come their music has been used in a Volvo commercial and appeared in the film Lemony Snicket? More info
