State Fair Youth Livestock Auction nets record $94,000 for steer

0

— Affiliated Multi-Family Services Inc. purchased the 2007 grand champion steer for a record-breaking $94,000, and gross sales of 4-H/FFA animals offered to market totaled an all-time high of $1,049,044 at the annual State Fair Youth Livestock Auction of Champions on Oct. 5.

The grand champion steer was owned by 15-year-old Meredith Larson of Pilot Point FFA. The reserve grand champion, owned by Taylor J. Shackelford of Prosper FFA, was purchased by a group of State Fair of Texas Concessionaires for $21,000.

Tom Thumb purchased the grand champions in four categories. The top market swine, owned by Austin Crissman of Bells FFA, sold for $13,000; the grand champion market lamb, owned by McKenna Bergmann of Kendall County 4-H, brought $15,000; the grand champion market goat, owned by Garrett Hancock of Randall County 4-H, was purchased for $13,000; and the winning pen of three market broilers owned by Resse Mathews of Elysian Fields FFA, sold for $13,000.

In addition to money pocketed by the young exhibitors, bids above pre-established caps generate funds for State Fair Scholarships, a program which provides financial support to students from around the state.
