Dallas Carter’s Michael Crabtree rewriting record book for freshmen receivers
Michael Crabtree, former Dallas Carter QB, continues to rewrite the history books. On Saturday Crabtree caught a 32-yard touchdown from Graham Harrell, his 15th touchdown of the season.
The previous freshman record of 14 TD catches was held by Jabar Gaffney (Florida in 2000), Mike Williams (Southern California in 2002) and Davone Bess (Hawaii in 2005). What’s most impressive is that Crabtree and the Red Raiders are only halfway through their 2007 campaign.
The Dallas native went on to catch two more touchdown passes in Tech’s 42-17 victory over Iowa State. He caught a a 2 yard TD reception later in the first quarter and another from 15 yards out in the 4th. The redshirt freshman came into the game leading the nation in receptions (60), receiving yards (920) and touchdowns.
One more TD reception will give Crabtree the record for most touchdowns in a single season among Big 12 players (Rashaun Woods 17, Oklahoma State) . Crabtree is well on his way towards the Division I season mark of 27 touchdown receptions held by Jerry Rice and Troy Edwards.
