Lantana girl returns home following serious bike accident
The community welcomed home a Lantana girl Tuesday who suffered a severe head injury in a bicycle accident.
Alexa Eason, 6, returned to her home in the Dakota neighborhood nine weeks after puncturing her skull on a metal rod from a parked trailer.
The first-grader underwent emergency surgery, followed by two months of intense speech and physical therapy. She will continue her therapy at an outpatient facility. One more surgery to repair her skull is planned for Oct. 26.
"Alexa is still facing some fairly serious challenges, but we know that miracles have happened and will happen again," said her mother, Peg Eason.
On her way home, Alexa stopped by E.P. Rayzor Elementary School, where her teachers and classmates gathered to welcome her back.
When she arrived at her house, Alexa was greeted by flowers, cards, posters and balloons.
