DALLAS Copper thieves created a 911 outage on Thursday night in northeast Dallas in the area bound by Skillman Street, Park Lane, Abrams Road, and Larmanda Street. The thieves cut down 180 feet of copper wire from a phone line.
Police set up an emergency command post in the parking lot of the Target at Skillman and Abrams. Crews from AT&T were expected to have the service restored by Saturday afternoon.
I still can't figure out why the police aren't doing surveillance at salvage places that buy copper. I know there's a lot of crime out there, and it's hard to catch a copper thief in the act. But how many people buy "used copper"? How hard would it be to set up officers at a couple of salvage yards and see if copper is brought in? Maybe, like, I don't know, the day after a theft? Or maybe they know that AT&T will do a much better job at catching the copper thieves than they can. I mean, LAME.

That was a weird scene at the Target last night. I didn't realize what was going on until later that night when I heard about the outage. Looked like every other car driving on the road was a police car. It's nice to see that kind of response.

But where were all the cops when the copper was being removed from the phone lines right out in public view????
The only way to stop this craziness is to make it illegal to buy copper that is "experienced" or not from a certified copper vendor.
