Southern Miss 28, SMU Mustangs 7
The SMU Mustangs were in fine form Saturday night, getting beaten in all facets of the game 28-7 in Mississippi. Trailing 28-0 late in the fourth quarter, the Mustangs at least avoided another ignominious shutout when quarterback Justin Willis hit DeMyron Martin for a 16 yard touchdown pass to make the final appear closer than it actually was.
Willis had a sub-par game, going 19-for-31 for 189 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Willis also led the team in rushing, carrying the ball 19 times for 97 yards and a fumble.
The Mustangs' defense was once again primarily at fault, giving up a balanced attack of 206 yards rushing and 208 yards passing to the Golden Eagles. The loss drops SMU to 1-5 on the season.
