University of North Texas 31, LA Monroe 21
DENTON UNT went up early, then held off a fourth-quarter rally by LA Monroe in a 31-21 victory that was the first of the season. Using a balanced offensive attack, the Mean Green were able to keep their offense on the field for extended drives, and for perhaps the first time all season UNT had a winning mixture of rushing, passing and timely defense.
UNT quarterback Giovanni Vizza had a good game, going 16-for-30 for 202 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Vizza was also second on the team in rushing, with 21 carries for 66 yards, including a 38 yard breakout run.
Receiver Casey Fitzgerald also had a great day, catching 6 passes for 118 yards -- but most importantly, a 99-yard touchdown catch in the first quarter that seemed to deflate the Warhawks early.
