Rally showdown on city of Irving’s immigration policies on Saturday

— Two opposing groups rallied outside Irving City Hall on Saturday afternoon, expressing their views about the city's use of the "Criminal Alien Program," in which the city notifies federal officials when they've arrested suspected illegal immigrants.

Approximately 200 people in favor of the program, called "Citizens for Immigration Reform," were at City Hall when the second group of approximately 500 people -- "Axio America" -- marched in, and a chanting contest ensued. Irving has been making the national news as the latest focal point of the illegal immigrant issue.

According to WFAA, the Axio group chanted "We are America!" in Spanish, while the supporters of CAP shouted, "English! English! English!" and "Deport! Deport! Deport!"

But according to KRLD, which characterized the rally face-off as "peaceful," the protestors chanted "USA USA" and "Yes we can. Yes we can."

DrColes, says:

80% of the American people want an end to anarchy!

Illegal workers are criminals, those who hire them are criminals and those who aid-and-abet them are criminals.

Illegal aliens in America have NO rights. We are required by law to arrest and prosecute, deport them. (Title 8 U.S. Code)

No, matter your political party affiliation, and setting aside your thoughts on issues. We all need to remember what it is to be an American Citizen. We need to make sure our elected representatives obey their Oath of Office and keep their Oath of Allegiance.

DrColes is among the few voices of reason I have encountered in Pegasus News blogs. Chanting "We are America" in Spanish is absurd. One nation, one language! Make use of the Anglican tongue or kindly retreat to your third-world pit.

On the contrary, rkiosk, my statements are consistent with those of Theodore Roosevelt. Surely you wouldn't compare him to a deranged dictator. There's nothing hateful about cultural preservation. Language and culture are inseparable. If one is lost, so is the other. I'm not demanding that anyone be of Anglican lineage. That's not a prerequisite for speaking English.

It's pathetic how people attempt to discredit views by sugessting that racist motives are at work. That's a very convenient way to dodge substantive discussion. Such ruses are employed only by cowards.

Who is suggesting racist motives? I re-read all the posts and have no idea where that came from. Maybe deranged applies to you. You can have all the cultural preservation you want, just don't foist it upon others.

Bemused: As someone who links language and culture, maybe you would like to use a word other than "Anglican" to describe the English language. "Anglican" is used most often to describe the Anglican Communion, aka Church of England. And if you are referring to the language of the Angles, you are suggesting that everyone learn to speak a Baltic dialect that no longer exists, having been influenced and superseded (in England) by other languages like Norman and French, along with a hundred other languages including Spanish.

Bemused, says:

Mr. Brewer, while your didactism may carry some merit in the most limited sense ponderable, "Anglican" does not refer exclusively to the Church of England but also to the people of England and their culture. Thus, my reference to the "Anglican tongue" is perfectly applicable.

I am not recommending that we revive the language of the Angles, Saxons, or Jutes, but this brings up an interesting point. Why are the Jutes excluded from the term "Anglo-Saxon"? The Jutes arrived in England before the Angles or the Saxons, and "Anglo-Saxon" refers to people of Jute origin as well. The exclusion of "Jute" is curious.

"Anglican tongue" would have been "perfectly applicable" if you were George Perkins Marsh writing The Origin and History of the English Language in the 1860s. It's considered archaic and stilted these days, but, then again, so are many of the statements you have made here.

Rawlins- I like it! Once atop the cake, it could go through gender-confusion. And cake-climbing can be dangerous, for the sake of the kids, it should wear a helmet.

Brewer, you are no arbiter of expression. Should I long for writing guidance, I'll consult the Chicago Manual of Style or, my favorite, Strunk and White's The Elements of Style. Besides, when you label my prose "stilted," you simply confirm my commitment to literary tradition. I do, however, respect you for citing The Origin and History of the English Language. You seem to have a liberal-arts foundation, and we are brethren in that regard.

Gilliand, your mastery of disgraceful metaphor leaves me wallowing in inferiority. Your brilliance is inimitable. How I lament the defects of my intellect in the presence of a true sage. Tutor me, for I am your charge.

Yost, I trust your are categorizing me as either a masculine woman or an effeminate man. I assure you I am neither. As for "gender-confusion," is that not what you encountered upon shaving your legs this morning?

At ease, Mr. Brewer. I write in jest. I hope everyone here realizes that. Why is it that every Pegasus News blog I participate in strays miles from the topic at hand? Do I have a distracting effect, or am I really so pervasively loathed that I've become a sponge of universal scorn?

Had the timing been there, it would have been golden. Especially after the thread erupted on Dallas PD ticketing for loud car stereos.
