0

You, too can nab a golden statuette.

Filmmakers: here's your chance to join the ranks of previous winners of the USA Film Festival's Short Film and Video competition, such as Billy Bob Thornton, Todd Haynes, Sara Hickman (the local chanteuse as filmmaker? Yep) and Wes Anderson, all of whom have taken top honors in previous contests. Definition of a short film: 60 minutes or less.

Cash prizes in the amount of 1,000 simoleons will be awarded to the winners in the following categories: fiction, non-fiction, animation and experimental - with qualifying entries going on to receive consideration by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (read: Oscar. One such golden statuette was handed to USA entrant/winner Ari Sandel last year for his extremely amusing West Bank Story). In addition, "best of" awards (which include a $500 cash prize) will be conferred upon winners in the family, Texas and student categories. Finally, special jury awards bearing $250 in prize money will go to four films in various of the major categories.

Qualifying films will have been produced between Jan. 1, 2007 and March 1, 2008; the deadline for entries is March 1, 2008. Winners will be announced during the 38th annual USA Film Festival, which will run from April 24 through May 1, 2008.

Obtain your official entry form by calling the USA Film Fest folks at 214-821-FILM, or drop by Withoutabox to submit your entry directly.
