Tulane 41, Southern Methodist University (SMU) 34 (OT)
DALLAS The SMU Mustangs put up quite a fight Saturday night, but were ultimately unable to get over the hump against Tulane in a 41-34 overtime loss in Dallas. This battle of two 1-5 teams came down to the wire in large part thanks to the efforts of a fourth quarter Mustangs rally that tied the game with eight seconds left.
Down 27-17 entering the last quarter, the Mustangs scored a touchdown and a field goal to tie it midway through. Tulane jumped up 7, however, on a 6 play, 76 yard drive immediately following the field goal. SMU was able to mount a 9 play, 81 yard drive in the final two minutes, capped by a 7 yard touchdown pass from Justin Willis to Zack Sledge.
Tulane was able to score a touchdown in the overtime, however, while SMU could not.
SMU quarterback Justin Willis had a stellar game, going 28-for-37 for 359 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Willis also ran the ball 11 times for 35 yards. Receiver Emmanuel Sanders also had a great day, catching 8 passes for 152 yards and two early scores.
