AUSTIN – Two students from Scott Johnson Middle School in the McKinney Independent School District recently won awards in the “Texas Landscapes and Celebrations” artwork competition jointly sponsored by the Texas Art Association and the Texas Commission on the Arts.
The students’ artwork, submitted by Scott Johnson Middle School Art Specialist Gwen Pobanz, will be displayed at various state government buildings during December and January.
In lieu of the artwork, here's a pic of the young humble artists. John Siamro at left; Jasmin Trevino at right. Bravo.
Seventh grade student John Siamro won an Award of Excellence certificate and Medal for his watercolor painting of a ship. Jasmin Trevino’s tempera painting won an Award of Merit certificate and medal. The piece was done in the style of the Australian Aborigines and featured a flower and hummingbird, surrounded by patterns represented in nature.
Both students will have their artwork on exhibit at the Texas Landscapes and Celebration exhibit at the Texas Education Agency’s headquarters in Austin, Texas, at the Texas Commission on the Arts headquarters and at the Legislative Budget Board. The artwork will be on display from Dec. 3, to Feb. 8 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Mondays through Fridays. Only 200 student entries from across the state will be exhibited.
In addition to the Awards of Excellence, three other Scott Johnson Middle School students also received Honorable Mention certificates for their artwork. Haley Barr received an Honorable Mention Award for her watercolor pencil of a butterfly, Katelyn Porterfield won an Honorable Mention for her oil pastel of cowboy boots and Samantha Nunez won an Honorable Mention Award for her Aboriginal style tempera painting of a snake.
