Texas Wesleyan men’s soccer falls to College of the Southwest
Senior Day for Rams sullied by shutout at the hands of Mustangs.
The Texas Wesleyan University men’s soccer (8-7-2, 4-2-1 RRAC) team suffered a tough 2-0 loss at the hands of College of the Southwest (6-10, 3-4) on Saturday. The game marked the final regular season game for four seniors.
The game will not be the final home game for those seniors, however. Texas Wesleyan will host next week’s Red River Athletic Conference Tournament. At 4-2-1 in conference play, the Rams have wrapped up the second seed and earned a bye through Thursday’s first round.
Texas Wesleyan will face the highest remaining seed after Thursday’s quarterfinals at 2:00 p.m. on Friday.
In Saturday’s loss, the Rams controlled play for nearly the entire contest. The Rams had numerous scoring opportunities in the first half, but could not convert.
During a period of 52 seconds midway through the second half, the wheels came off. The Mustangs’ Travis Dutton found the net off a corner kick from Dylan Thomas in the 71st minute. Less than a minute later, Dylan Thomas gave his team a 2-0 lead.
“If you can’t finish, you can’t win,” commented head coach Josh Gibbs. “We can’t afford to have a defensive breakdown like that, and we have to do a better job of finishing on the other end. We controlled the ball well, but you have to score to win.”
