SMU men’s soccer sweeps weekly Conference USA awards

The SMU men's soccer team, which climbed to No. 2 in the nation in the newest Soccer America poll, swept this week's Conference USA men's soccer Player of the Week awards.

Junior forward Scott Geppert was named Offensive Player of the Week after scoring in both SMU games this week, a 2-1 victory Wednesday night over UAB and a 2-0 win Sunday afternoon over Florida International. Against UAB, Geppert scored the tying goal in the 24th minute when he knocked home a rebound off the UAB goalkeeper. Against FIU, with the Golden Panthers scrambling for a tying goal, Geppert collected a crossing pass from sophomore forward Dane Saintus, drew the FIU goalie out toward him and flicked a shot into the upper right corner to ice the game for the Mustangs. Despite missing five games this season, Geppert has four goals - just two behind the team lead. His four goals tie him for 10th place in Conference USA.

Senior goalkeeper Steve Sandbo picked up his sixth and seventh victories of the season to earn C-USA Defensive Player of the Week honors. Sandbo notched his third shutout of the year - and the sixth of his career - and lowered his goals-against average to 1.03 in the victories. His goals-against average is third-best among Conference USA goalkeepers, and his three shutouts are tied for third place.

The Mustangs now travel to Columbia, S.C., to face the South Carolina Gamecocks Wednesday night in a 7 p.m. (central time) game that will be broadcast on Fox Soccer Channel, before returning home next weekend to host Memphis at 7 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 27.
