It would be an understatement to say that any kind of talk regarding undocumented immigrants evokes emotion.
We have only to see today’s Jacquielynn Floyd’s column in The Dallas Morning News and responses to the question: Is Dallas racist, to get an idea how polarizing the illegal immigration issue is.
To anyone who has been following this debate (from Farmers Branch and Irving to Congress), it’s clear that there is one side who believes in the “Spirit of the Law” and others who believe in doing the “Will of the Divine Spirit.”
But which is right? Is either wrong?
With such a volatile issue, perspective is always needed. Tonight, at the University of Dallas, there will be a panel discussion examining the immigration issue from a theological perspective.
Moderated by Dallas Morning News editorial columnist, William McKenzie, the panel features Dr. John Norris and Professor Maria Pia Septien Ramirez of UD’s department of Theology, the Reverend Owen K. Ross, founding pastor of La Fundicion de Cristo/Christ’s Foundry and Sister Nancy Sullivan, director of Mission Awareness/Justice and Peace for the Diocese of Dallas.
Tonight’s conversation will discuss the “balance between respect for the law and the biblical order to welcome strangers.”
The Dean of the School of Ministry at UD, Dr. Brian Schmisek, said, “I am confident that the exchange of ideas will be both intellectually stimulating and inspirational.”
No doubt it will be stimulating, but time will tell how inspirational.

Let me guess who the ones "who believe in doing the 'Will of the Divine Spirit'" might be. Are they the men who leave their families behind and after a few years, forget about them, stop sending them money, and find new wives among U.S. citizen women?

Dallas Morning News will be there? So much for being impartial.

I'll make the same comment here I made when this same debate happened at SMU:
It's cool that all these big-whoops are getting together to discuss the immigration problem from a theological perspective- but really, how long would that take?
Isn't the majority of the Mexican population in Mexico Catholic? Doesn't Catholicism deplore any form of contraception? Isn't that why the population has out-grown Mexico's economy- causing them to head north for work?
I'm not trying to be a wise-guy here, I'm really asking?
