Dallas PD eases policy on past drug use of new hires

Dallas police have eased their standards on hiring. New hires can now have used small amounts of cocaine or heroin in their distant past for experimental purposes. This new policy is similar to the hiring practices of the FBI.

I'm not sure about this one.

I think having previous-users on the force may make being arrested for possession a little less harsh, but if you've actually 'experimented' with heroin, no matter how distant, you're pretty hard-core.

And even years later, if you become a stressed-out cop, your overall personality may reflect that in someway down the line.
I'm just sayin'.

I agree, Mr. Yost. Although people are certainly capable of reform, heroin experimentation seems pretty severe. Of course, the DPD is doing everything it can to attract recruits. Who wants to be a cop in this city?

"Who wants to be a cop in this city?"

You got me, especially when they cops have to respond to those nuisance calls. Like people complaining about "assaults" when somebody doesn't want them videotaping. And people calling about noise problems in their neighborhoods.

that's not really true, it's possible to consume it without shooting.

Hey you know, maybe the people hiring cops actually did their due diligence and decided that they ought to judge people as individuals, and have the experience and knowledge to decide where "lines" need to be drawn. OTOH, maybe they're all so stupid and incompetent that a bunch of people with no experience with drugs or the police can make snap judgements more accurately than the police departments will no matter how thoroughly they've examined the idea.

Mr. Brewer, both tasks you've mentioned, although you consider them superfluous, are well within the duties of the police force. Noise ordinances are real, and shooting video in a public setting is legal even if someone does not wish to be on tape. Lobby to change any laws you deem unessential, but don't fault those who wish to see extant laws upheld.

Mr. Morren, who has led the discussion off course in this instance?

luniz- You make a valid point about judging people to hire on their individual merits.

It just seems to me that the qualifications for landing a job where you get to carry a gun and have control over other people's lives should be a bit stringent.

By the way, I'm a semi-retired-old-ex-hippie-doper myself, and I think there was a reason folks from my generation used to call Heroin the 'Big H'- because it is very extreme. Ask anyone who's done it.
