Dallas Morning News‘ annual Christmas cookie contest will have out-of-town judge

Email Print Tell us your story Comments (4)

For its annual Christmas -- er, Holiday Cookie Contest this year, the Dallas Morning News' Taste section will bring in a judge from outside Dallas: Rebecca Rather, the "Hill Country Pastry Queen".

OK, she's only from Fredericksburg, where she owns the Rather Sweet Bakery; but she also has a book, The Pastry Queen Christmas (Ten Speed Press, $32.50). She'll join other judges from the Dallas area.

Amateur bakers can find the entry form here; prizes are gift certificates from contest co-sponsor Central Market. One cool new thing is that the paper's making the entire database of winning cookie recipes available; I recommend the cranberry-caramel bars which won first prize in 2002 and are awesome.

What I don't see in the database is a good, real biscotti recipe. Maybe someone will enter one this year?

I'll bet those 'muffin kids' could make a good cookie.
