Getting five turnovers and still losing requires a special talent for sucking
The SMU Mustangs played one of their better games of the season Saturday afternoon, yet still managed to lose in the dying seconds of a 29-23 loss. Leading 20-7 at one point in the third quarter, the Golden Hurricane gradually chipped away at the Mustang's lead, until SMU appeared to have it in the bag with two minutes remaining in the game. Up 23-21, SMU opted to go for it on fourth-and-goal from Tulsa's one yard line and failed. Tulsa then marched 99 yards down the field for the game-winning touchdown.
SMU quarterback Justin Willis had an above-average game, throwing 17-for-35 for 194 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. He also ran 13 times for 50 yards.
Despite getting five turnovers to Tulsa's one, SMU was unable to defend against the Golden Hurricane's vaunted passing attack, which put up 334 yards and three touchdowns. The loss drops SMU to 1-7 on the season.
