New series of cow sculptures coming to Harwood section of Dallas’ Uptown

DALLAS — On Friday November 2, there'll be a welcoming ceremony for the "Harwood Swiss Cows," a new cow sculpture installation sure to compete with the steers at Pioneer Plaza in downtown Dallas and the mustangs in Las Colinas.

There'll be 20 "Harwood brand" Swiss cows "grazing" in the 17 city blocks that comprise the Harwood area of Dallas' Uptown district -- including high-rise offices, residences, and greens -- centered around the Marie Gabrielle gardens adjacent to the Centex Building at 2728 N. Harwood Street.

The ceremony takes place in the gardens at 11:00 a.m. on Friday as part of the North Texas Commercial Association of Realtors office tour.

Harwood International CEO Gabriel Barbier-Mueller is also Honorary Swiss Consul and a native of Switzerland. His high-rise residential tower Azure is scheduled to be completed in late 2007, and ground has been broken on a 26-story office building, Saint Ann Court.

The cow sculptures were designed by Swiss designer/artist Jurg Bachtold, recognized for his lifelike animal statuary. Installation was slated to be complete by Friday, until the discovery that each weighed 60 pounds led to speculation that the cows might "walk away," says spokeswoman Kimberly Geary. Four will be installed by Friday, with the remainder undergoing attachment to one-ton platforms that will make them a less likely target for theft.
