DALLAS SMU was royally embarassed on its home field Monday, as the Texas Tech Red Raiders blew past the Mustangs en route to a lopsided 49-9 loss. Tech quarterback Graham Harrell, playing on "easy" level, went 43-for-58 for 415 yards and four touchdowns. Even in the fourth quarter when Tech was uncharacteristically not doing everything in their power to run up the score, Raiders running back Shannon Woods still scored two additional touchdowns.
SMU QB Justin Willis seemed to take a step back against Tech, going just 15-for-33 for 138 yards and two interceptions. He threw for no TDs, was unable to mount a single decent scoring drive and was sacked three times.

Well there was a day:
At least we can count on Tech to hate the Aggies and provoke their comic outrage.

SMU Football Head Coach Phil Bennett hosted his weekly press conference on Tuesday, Sept. 4, in advance of the SMU-North Texas matchup. Below are some excerpts:
On the Tech game... "I felt we had an opportunity in the second quarter yesterday. In most of the games, you get those `break points'. We just weren't able to get the ball back to our offense and we weren't able to score touchdowns in the red zone. I thought that in the first half, our first four possessions were six-, seven-, eight- and nine-play drives, which was what we were looking for. We just didn't get what we wanted in terms of explosion plays to get in the end zone. Dropped balls, bad reads - we got stopped down there one time on a 3rd-and-1 where we missed a block on a screen. You can't do that against a team like Texas Tech."
On North Texas... "I think that you're going to see two football teams Saturday that are better than what they showed their first game. Obviously it's a big game for us and it's a big game for them. A year ago they beat us and some people called it an upset, but I thought they did enough to win the game. I'm not worried about revenge, I just want to become a better football team, and that's what our goal with these players is going to be. This game is about execution and doing the things that you're capable of doing. I think we're a better football team than we showed yesterday. We're capable of making more plays and I feel the same way after watching North Texas against Oklahoma. When things start to steamroll a little bit, you lose your composure and you do some things out of the ordinary."
