ARLINGTON—Astronomy is a hobby that enthusiasts can enjoy without any specific reason, but there are events in the sky—like eclipses and meteor shows—that provide inspiration for heightened interest in space and in the space program.

The Planetarium at UT Arlington is observing two special events in September and October.

Saturday, Sept. 15, is the 2007 International Astronomy Day and Thursday, Oct. 4, marks the 50th anniversary of the launching of the first artificial satellite, Sputnik I, heralding the beginning of the space age.

In celebration of these celestial events, the planetarium will give $1 off tickets for public shows during September and October to any school child who brings in a drawing or single-page essay about space or the space program. There will be an exhibit of selected essays and drawings starting the last week of October. For more information, call Marc Rouleau, (817) 272-0822.
