UTA’s ‘Conversations’ to begin September 12

Assistant Professor of History Thomas Adam will discuss the events that led up to the genocide of the Jews during WWII and the ways historians have tried to explain this mass murder.

ARLINGTON—The University of Texas at Arlington’s OneBook 2007/08 shared reading experience is a Pulitzer Prize winning graphic novel about the Holocaust. “Maus, A Survivor’s Tale,” by Art Spiegelman, is written in two volumes, “Maus I: My Father Bleeds History” and “Maus II: And Here My Troubles Began”. It tells the story of the writer’s father, Vladek Spiegelman, from the beginning of the Nazis’ persecution of the Jews in Poland up through his years at Auschwitz with his wife, Anja. Using images of mice for the Jews and cats for the Nazis, Spiegelman brings the story of the Holocaust to life.

An integral part of the OneBook shared reading experience is a lecture series, Conversations, drawing on a theme from the book. The theme drawn from “Maus” is prejudice. The first lecture is noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, in the sixth floor parlor of the Central Library at UT Arlington, 702 Planetarium Place.

Assistant Professor of History Thomas Adam will discuss the events that led up to the genocide of the Jews during WWII and the ways historians have tried to explain this mass murder. He will highlight events such as the Wannsee Conference and the role of the SS-Special Task Forces, as well as discuss various commemorations of the Holocaust in literature, film and memorials.

The lecture is free and open to the public on a space-available basis.
