Benefit for Dallas soul-food restaurant Vern’s Place on September 16
DALLAS Vern's Place, the beloved soul food restaurant on the edge of Deep Ellum at the corner of Exposition Avenue and Main Street, is having a fund-raiser on September 16 at 3 p.m., sez BackTalk.
The restaurant has been in peril ever since its landlords put the place up for sale in April. They found a buyer who's going to need to raise the rent -- $1250 a month versus their current $800 rent. The sale is expected to close November 1, whereupon Vern's owner Suvern Freeman Simmons, 78, is considering moving. Meanwhile, she and her family members who help at the restaurant are seeking donations, which can be mailed to the restaurant or by contacting her granddaughter Gail Freeman at 469-735-2258 or the restaurant at 214-823-0435.
