0

SMU junior P/K Thomas Morstead has been named the Conference USA Special Teams Player of the Week, the league announced Monday, September 10.

Morstead punted five times for 278 yards against North Texas, giving him a 55.6 yard punting average, the fourth-highest single-game average in SMU history. He also had a career-long 72-yard punt, which ties for the 10th-longest at SMU. All 10 of his punts this season have either been 50-plus yards or inside the 20 (six 50-plus, six inside the 20, and two that were both). Morstead's first PAT of the game set a new SMU record for consecutive PAT makes at 35 (previous was Eddie Garcia, 34 from 1978-81). He was 6-for-6 on the night and has now converted 40 in a row.

The win is Morstead's first career weekly honor. He was a preseason first-team All-C-USA pick.

Morstead and SMU return to the field on Saturday, Sept. 15, when they travel to Jonesboro, Ark., to face Arkansas State at 6 p.m. The game will be televised in the Metroplex on TXA 21.
