Exhibition local/e to Open Oct. 5 at UTD

The University of Texas at Dallas will host local/e in the Main Gallery of the University’s Visual Arts Building Oct. 5–Nov. 10. The exhibition, which is free and open to the public and is curated by Marilyn Waligore, an associate professor of photography at the University, represents the work of artists who document a local area or emphasize a sense of place.

Waligore explains, “The selected works in this exhibition, featuring photography and video, reveal complex spaces, social interactions and cultural and historical perspectives. Due to the conventions of duration and optics, a photograph — and video — retains a special connection to time and place.”

Artists featured in the exhibition include Danielle Avram, Mark Luthringer, Diane McGurren, Kristy Peet, Luther Smith, Lupita Murillo Tinnen, Dylan Vitone and Byrd Williams. The artists, from Texas, California and Pennsylvania, provide insight into how people define “place” or experience space. They use photography and video to address topics such as enduring communities, visual perception and the environment.

The opening reception is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 5, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. An artist talk with Lupita Murillo Tinnen is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 16, at 2 p.m. in the Visual Arts Main Gallery. The reception and talk are free and open to the public.

The exhibition will coincide with the South Central regional conference of the Society of Photographic Education (SPE) and will include work by several SPE members. That conference will take place at the University of Texas at Arlington Oct. 18–20.
