Arkansas State 45, Southern Methodist University 28
The SMU Mustangs seemed competitive through most of Saturday night's 45-28 blowout loss, but in the fourth quarter the Arkansas State Indians put a serious smackdown on SMU's hopes for a second consecutive win.
Down 21-0 in the first quarter, SMU seemed poised to crawl back into the game after three Justin Willis touchdown passes brought the Mustangs to within 28-21. Unfortunately, that was the point at which the Indians decided to score 17 straight points in the fourth quarter to put the game away.
Willis was a one-man offense for the Mustangs, going 21-for-40 for 261 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions. Willis also led the team in rushing by a wide margin, rushing 14 times for 95 yards, mostly on scrambles. No other Mustang had more than 6 carries or more than 3 yards.
Down by a huge margin most of the game, the Mustangs were unable to stop the Indians' rushing attack, which put up a whopping 259 yards on 50 carries. Indians quarterback Corey Leonard ran for three touchdowns and threw for two more.
