Top designers offer Hispanic Heritage shirts at Nordstrom

The contestants had to interpret how they visualized the meaning of Hispanic heritage as it pertained to the art of dance.

Recently, the U.S. Census released a report that found Texas ranked third in the nation in the percentage of people who speak a language at home other than English — 29 percent of Texas residents were found to speak Spanish at home, higher than anywhere else in the country.

Maybe that explains why an advertisement announcing a really cool collaboration between the retailer Nordstrom and the Cuban designer Robert Rodriguez that resulted in three student-designed T-shirts for sale at the store appeared only in español in our local English-language print paper.

For those who are Spanish-challenged but are no less proud Latinas/os and who might like to wear a little ethnic pride, I’ll tell you about it: the T-shirts were the product of a competition opened to students at the country’s top design schools.

The students had to interpret how they visualized the meaning of Hispanic heritage as it pertained to the art of dance. It seems all three winners, Lorna Mahler, Elly Choi and Vanessa De La Torre, attend Parsons.

The T-shirts will be sold in the Savvy department at Nordstrom’s Dallas Galleria location and online, but only during Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 – October 15).

And FYI: It might be a newsflash, but not all Hispanics speak, read or even understand Spanish.
